𝗪𝐓𝐅 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫?⁣ ⁣ I get asked this quite frequently by clients. What is a toner? What does a toner do? Why does my hair need a toner?⁣ ⁣ Otherwise known as a glaze/gloss/Demi/refresh. ⁣ ⁣ If your hairdresser is applying a 𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐑 to your hair it’s not because it ‘hasn't Lifted properly’ Or or it has ‘lifted yellow’ . ⁣ ⁣ When you hilight hair it will always lift either red, orange or yellow OR on the rare occasion to a very pale yellow (think inside of a bananna) . ⁣ So for example for a blonde client who wants to be a creamy/ash blonde what we would have to do is neutralise any of these tones that have came through after hilighting. By doing so we then add a toner to the hair to do so. ⁣ ⁣ Toners are not universal – there isn’t just one 𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐑 . They come in many shapes and forms. They can range from a shampoo, semi permanent colour and even a permanent colour. We cocktail the toner to meet the requirements of each client. Toners don’t always be on blonde clients either. I’ll add a toner to my copper clients to refresh the colour on the ends, I’ll add a toner to the ends of some brunettes to bring back shine and possibly tone down any unwanted brightness. ⁣ ⁣ When I 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰 I tone down the roots of the hilighted area – 1. For a more natural/ lived in colour and 2. It leaves maintenance that little bit easier. ⁣ ⁣ Anywayyyyy I think If I type the word toner one more time I might just have to throw my phone away BUT I hope this sheds a light for clients as to what toners are and what they do. ⁣ ⁣ Tag a client who need to see this!

My clients say they find it difficult to find brunette inspo. I, myself, have noticed that there isn’t enough subtle brunette work circulating IG. I have hesitated to share this, not because I don’t find it beautiful, but because it’s such a subtle contrast that I questioned whether or not the engagement would be good… Lately, I’ve come to realize that it isn’t just about impressing other stylists and getting the ‘likes’, but also providing inspiration for the woman that don’t want to veer far from their natural — @three_coloreducation
